How Are People Treated When They Make You?

The short answer is: Not the best, but not the worst.

Apple products are all made by people. What may shock you is that these people are almost all between the age of 16 and 30! Many of these teens left their home villages to work in iPod city to create a variety of products, including the Macbook and Macbook pro. These workers used to work for 12 hours a day, with two-hour meal breaks twice a day. Many try to get some sleep between meals and work, if they can eat fast enough. IPod City also features several recreational sites, including a gym and swimming pool. After retiring for the night, some workers return to houses outside the factory, many however, work and live inside the factory. Workers share dormitories with 6 other workers, sleeping in tight bunk beds in tiny rooms. Each worker works for only around two dollars an hour. Do the math, working 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, 365 days a year! That’s around 7500 dollars a year. Minimum wage per hour in Ontario is $10.25 that’s over 5 times what these employees get paid!
For many, this just isn't enough to support the large families that they left back in their villages, so some make the final decision. There have been numerous reports of suicides within iPod city, including people Hanging themselves and jumping of the building itself. This persisted until Foxconn was forced to put anti-suicide nets on the second floor walls, to catch anyone who tries to jump off of the building. From what the government, and Apple have researched, these workers are committing suicide because the payment that comes as recompense to their families is actually more than what they get paid per year! So essentially, them getting killed will help support the family better than them working!
There have also been two separate incidents in which flammable dust ignited and set of huge fires, killing employees at Foxconn. The dust was later revealed to be aluminum dust in poorly ventilated air ducts. The dust ignited and killed around 3 people, injuring 12. Apple later launched an inquiry into this and quickly fixed the ventilation problems, rectifying this problem.
Foxconn launched a huge inquiry with Apple into the troubles at the factory, and was instructed by Apple to make some changes to their work system. Each worker now gets around 10 hour shifts, at the same 2$ an hour payment system, with added 10 minute breaks. This was received with quite a bit of confusion from Foxconn workers, as the have never had this happen before. Many believe that although Foxconn promises to not change/lower their wages, they may actually lose money over this, due to the fact that their wages are by the hour, and many work overtime to get a little extra.
